New Covid-19 Policies

Whilst we are delighted that we are moving away from the restrictions that have impacted us all during this time, we are conscious that Covid has not gone away and with this in mind we have decided to leave some safety measures in place to protect our guest and our staff.

  • We will be wearing face coverings and politely request that our guest continue to wear them while moving around the establishment.
  • Customers will be seated in the restaurant and we will continue with table service inside and online ordering system in our beer garden
  • The sanitisation points still will be dotted around the premises
  • The screens at our tills will remain in place
  • We will still do the Ozone treatment of our bedrooms prior to your arrival as well as regular cleaning of high touch points and through clean of the tables between dinning guests

We hope that you will respect our decision to protect our staff and customers. As we head into a busy summer holiday period, please stay safe everyone and we look forward to welcoming you all at the Horse and Farrier and the Salutation soon.

Order Our Garden Menu from Your Mobile

Food To Go or Dine with us Al Fresco

We are delighted to introduce our new online ordering system from Mobo2Go.

This innovative system gives you the option to order food and drink via our website, and you can choose to collect and take away or enjoy in our Al Fresco dining area.

And it's so easy to use too - https://horseandfarrier.mobo2go.co.uk/mobile/

Together with Mobo2go, we worked behind the scenes to develop our app to provide our customers with an easier way of ordering when you are in our outside areas or at the Sally. We are giving customers the ability to pick their favourite dishes from our Al fresco Garden Menu using your smartphone or tablet in just a few simple steps and you don’t have to stand in the queue!

Enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner, soaking up the stunning views of the majestic blencathra.

In these strange times you may not want to go out so often so you have the opportunity of placing your order from the comfort of your home for collection when you want it. So you can still enjoy a Farrier fish and chips or Sunday lunch at home.

Of course, you can still book a table in our restaurant and enjoy table service or you may wish to escape for a night or three and stay with us. We are very much open for business.

Open for Carry Out Food

It has been a tough week for everyone, and it is with sad hearts that we must close the Horse and Farrier and The Sally. This is a heart breaking decision, but it is one that we have had to make by government instruction.

Our upmost priority is to protect our loyal guests, the Horse and Farrier and Sally teams, and our families at home. Unfortunately, we are cancelling all bookings until 1st June 2020.

To be clear: we have had no suspected cases of Coronavirus, either from our guests or our team. We have been rigorously enforcing all the government guidelines indeed going above and beyond. We are devastated to have to shut a business which has run 24/7 for 365 days a year for as long as anyone can remember!

However – we will still supply food on a carry out basis - so down but not out

Our Take Away Menu

We will be in touch regarding room bookings and we are happy to work with you to reschedule

This is a huge ordeal for all of us, but with a level-head, we all will get through it. And we can't wait to welcome you back when we do.

Keep Safe!

Get Away From The Crowds

Whilst we deal with the uncertainty of coronavirus, I wanted to update you on the precautions we are taking to ensure that our restaurants, bars and guest rooms remain a safe space for our guests and employees to enjoy over the coming months.

As always in our five star kitchen, our restaurants, our bars and our guest rooms we maintain the highest possible level of hygiene.

Our team has been fully briefed with current government requirements and are undertaking extreme levels of health and safety procedures to ensure that guests and other staff members are safe.

As you would expect all of our tables are appropriately cleaned when customers leave, all high touch areas are cleaned regularly with appropriate antiviral solutions including menus taps door handles and bedroom equipment etc and of course all crockery cutlery and glassware is washed in high temperature commercial equipment. We have been kitted out with extra hand sanitiser so please feel free to make use of this during your time with us.

We want you to be able to get away from the crush of the bigger towns and enjoy the wonderful countryside around Threlkeld and to feel you can stay and eat with us in a safe environment.

Horse & Farrier featured in Countryside Magazine

We're proud to be featured in the November 2019 issue of the National Farmers Union magazine Countryside. The Horse & Farrier is the featured pub in Lorna Maybery's article Eat, Sleep, Walk... Cumbria  in which she "heads to the hills... and the lakes... in search of iconic Cumbrian food and drink". You can read the fantastic review she gave us below:

"If you’re looking for a pub with a really friendly welcome, chatty staff, an historic interior and great food, then the Horse and Farrier at Threlkeld is just the ticket. It sits just off the A66 in the shadow of spectacular Blencathera, one of the most northerly hills in the Lake District, so big tick then for stunning scenery too, especially if you dine al fresco in the pub’s garden.

We were greeted by waiter Keith, who looked rather dapper in his smart waistcoat and tie. His friendly welcome put us at ease and he regaled us with some of the history of the pub and how a recent refurbishment has seen the dining area extended into the building next door and new rooms added to the accommodation upstairs.

He left us with the extensive menu and we had a few moments of indecision as every dish looked too mouthwatering. In the end we selected the Piri Piri Tiger Prawn and Chorizo Skewes and Breaded Garlic Mushrooms to start, followed by the Jennings Ale Pie and the Traditional Cumberland Sausage The rich thick gravy and tender chunks of braised steak were quite excellent and the single curl sausage with onion mash and Jennings ale gravy also got a big thumbs-up. The ingredients are seasonal and locally sourced and the portion sizes are generous, making & excellent value for money.

And, if you are so full you can’t move, then you can stay the night in one of the newly decorated charming rooms and suites, and then enjoy a full English in the morning!"

If you'd like to experience the "charming rooms and suites" or "mouthwatering" food why not book a room or a table today?

Horse & Farrier Refurbishment

We are delighted to announce the completion of our recent refurbishment here at the Horse & Farrier.

We are delighted to introduce to our accommodation offering two terrific new suites; the Blencathra and the Saddleback. Our suites retain all the charm of a country coaching inn whilst introducing a fresh new design and are perfect for family breaks and romantic getaways. In addition, our other seven bedrooms have all been updated to the same high standards with king size and twin options available.

During our reshape here at the Horse & Farrier, we’ve increased and enhanced our dining space by extending into what was the adjoining cottage. Immense care and attention has gone into the planning process, partly due to our Grade II buildings listing, but also our dedication to keeping the authentic feel of this 17th century traditional Lakeland Inn. We have retained the open fires, comfortable seats and introduced a range of gorgeous fabrics and textures with complementing rustic wooden and stone floors. Our bar area has also been fully refurbished and we’ve created an area that is suitable for private parties and functions.

We've also enhanced our outdoor space introducing a timber covered area, ideal for al fresco dining when the weather is misbehaving!

Railway Path Funding Approved

There's great news for the Horse and Farrier, as customers will again be able to walk, cycle or run from Keswick to Threlkeld as they used to do before the bridges were destroyed in storm Desmond. Many of our customers used to walk up from Keswick enjoy a nice lunch and either walk or take the bus back, since Storm Desmond that has been a difficult route except for the fittest. The Lake District Foundation has recently announced funding for full steam ahead for the reconnection of the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path.

The foundation said “A £7.9 million funding package has been agreed to allow work to start on the final phase of reconnecting the Keswick to Threlkeld multi user trail which was severely damaged in Storm Desmond three years ago to the day (5 December).

This is an important milestone in this complex project which has required significant work to get to this stage, and it is fitting that key funding partners and local users gathered to mark this development exactly three years since the fateful storm.

Funding has been approved so far from Highways England and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Additionally, community fundraising by the Lake District Foundation has resulted in a £130,000 donation all which will enable the project to go ahead.”
